Assembly Location/Time:
7:30 AM Route 234 Commuter lot off of Rt 95
Tour Duration: Expect to return to Northern Virginia by 5:00 PM
Lunch: This will be an on-site picnic and participants are asked to provide their own lunches. BRCWRT will provide sodas, water, & chips. (BRCWRT September speaker Chris Mackowski & tour leaders have elected to include some new sites to make the tour more informative by using the half-hour that would be wasted by traveling to local fast-food restaurants.)
Exertion: Will be moderate, most trails are flat, but some have small incline. Part of the tour will be on the new CWT property at Jericho Mills where no trails exist, but flat fields.
Sign Up: Please sign up for the tour using the link to the left on this page; electronic sign up will also be available the meetings. There will also be a sign up sheet passed around at the BRCWRT meeting.
Inclement Weather: We will send out a weather cancellation notice via e-mail the morning of the tour. If you do not have e-mail please call Rob Orrison for an update.
Special Suggestions: Dress according to the weather and be sure to wear a hat and comfortable walking shoes.
Background: The Battle of North Anna was fought May 23–26, 1864, as part of Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign against Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Lee set up a defensive position along the North Anna and suffered a set back at Jericho Mills. But soon Lee and his engineers designed a trap for Grant, that the Army of the Potomac would walk into. North Anna is considered one of the best opportunities Lee had to thwart Grant on his way to Richmond.
