Subject Matter: The
ill-fated canal alongside Goose Creek that was
designed to enable the transport of goods to the
seaports of Georgetown and Alexandria. In
addition, visit Edward’s Ferry, where the Union’s
Army of the Potomac crossed the Potomac River
under horrendous conditions in an effort to catch
up with Bobby Lee and his army during the
Gettysburg Campaign.

- Physical directions from Rte. 7: Turn
onto Belmont Ridge Rd. (North), crossRiverside
Pkwy (road name changes to “Upper Belmont
Pl.”). Upon reaching a circle (roundabout),
encircle the roundabout and turn right at the
3rd exit onto Riverpoint Dr. Drive through the
neighborhood for 1-mi. and then turn left into
the entrance of the Riverpoint Dr. Trailhead
between two houses. Make a rather steep
descent into the park’s parking
lot.

Tour Sites include:
1. Deserted Village of
Elizabeth Mills: The village that
dates back to the early 1800s. View its
associated ruins, including the mill and
bridge/road that crossed Goose Creek. Also see
an impressive portion of the canal and stone
locks.
2. Double-Stone Lock: The
gem of the GC & LR Canal Co.’s canal
navigation system has been preserved and is
still viewable.
3. Edwards Ferry: At the
confluence of Goose Creek and the Potomac River,
and where Hooker’s entire Army of the Potomac
crossed the river under horrendous conditions in
an attempt to catch up with Lee and his army
during the Gettysburg Campaign.
