Subject matter:
Walk amongst c. 1850s traces of the
ill-fated Goose Creek & Little River
Navigation Co.’s canal, an effort to render 20
miles of Goose Creek navigable to the Potomac
River. View the associated stone ruins of the
village of Elizabeth Mills, its mill, bridge and
abutments. Finally, immerse
yourself where the Union’s Army of the Potomac
made its arduous crossingof a swollen and
swift-currented Potomac River late-June 1863, in
an attempt to catch up with the Army of Northern
Virginia.
Three Primary Sites:
- (1) The deserted village of Elizabeth Mills,
its mill and road / bridge abutments,
- (2) remnants of a magnificent stone lock
- (3) Edward’s Ferry (where the AOP crossed the
river)
