The CIVIL WAR MONUMENTS
of WASHINGTON, DC

Since many members of the BRCWRT live in close proximity to Washington, DC (or "The District" as it is locally known), I thought it might be fun to send you on a whirlwind tour of the DC monuments commemorating the Civil War.

[Somewhat-Necessary Legal Disclaimer]
A book entitled "Testament to Union - Civil War Monuments in Washington, DC" by Kathryn Allamong Jacob with photographs by Edwin Harlan Remsberg (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1998) offered up many of the well-known but also many lesser-known or even unknown monuments on this off-the-beaten-path tour. This book is the source for all descriptions and quotations, unless otherwise noted.

Also, here is chronology of Civil War events in and around Washington DC, 1861-1865. This is taken from the book "Mr. Lincoln's City" by Richard M. Lee.

I've tried to group monuments that are relatively close together to make it easier to plan a walking or driving tour - but trying to drive this is a ludicrous idea, don't bother!

If you know of more monuments, by all means, send them to me at BRCWRT WebMaster
